About Me

Seeing my students reach their goals is my passion

Hi, I'm Matt!

My Journey with mathematics has been long and has taught me a lot about effective learning.

In Year 10, I started teaching myself topics beyond the classroom syllabus, sparking a curiosity for Maths that has stuck with me since – from then on I was almost entirely self-taught. That curiosity led me to become the first student in my sixth form’s history to take A-level Maths early (after I convinced the school to allow it after outperforming all the students in the year above in a mock), earning top results and setting the stage for what came next.

At the University of Oxford, I continued to push myself, graduating with the highest-ranked 2:1 in my year at the Bachelor’s level despite setbacks along the way. I then went on to complete my Master’s in Mathematics with a First-Class/Distinction, earning multiple scholarships and prizes in recognition of my performance. More importantly, those years taught me how to learn mathematics effectively: the value of strong intuitive understanding, disciplined study habits, and focused exam technique. These are exactly the lessons I now share with my students – helping them build lasting confidence and achieve the results they’re truly capable of.

Taking an individualized, root cause approach to tutoring.

Over the years, I’ve supported learners at every stage – from GCSE and A-level students working towards top grades to ambitious applicants preparing for the Oxford MAT and university interviews. One thing has become clear: true progress doesn’t come from memorising methods or cramming past papers, but from identifying the root causes of difficulty and building a strategy that addresses them directly.

My approach is structured around three pillars:

Building a strong foundation of intuitive understanding

ensuring students genuinely grasp the “why” behind concepts, rather than just applying formulas mechanically.

Implementing regular, purposeful practice

turning understanding into fluency through consistent application, so methods become second nature.

Developing exam-specific technique

applying knowledge under timed conditions, refining problem-solving strategies, and learning how to present solutions clearly and efficiently.
